I had contemplated the priesthood in my youth.
If you could grant three wishes for the health service, what would they be?
I would ensure greater emphasis on prevention of accidents and illness, run hospitals to suit patients rather than consultants and make a commitment to ensure equality of access to all services.
What is your greatest fear?
Being alone when I get old.
Have you ever been a patient and were you a good one?
Yes, I had a partial gastrectomy four years ago. I think I was a good patient.
When or where are you happiest
When busy and things are going well.
How do you cope with stress?
To relax, I swim and play golf and a few years ago I was introduced to jet-skiing. It's a great way to enjoy free time.

Ability to get on with people.

Lack of patience.

Yes, I'm a great believer in acupuncture.
