What figure from the world of medicine or health do you most admire?
Louis Pasteur. His work epitomises what is needed in modern medical science - the translation of scientific progress into benefits for mankind. I also have immense admiration for all the frontline staff in the health services. The oncology and radiotherapy teams in Cork under the direction of Séamus O'Reilly and Séamus Ó Cathail did a great job caring for my mother in-law last year.
What other career might you have chosen?
Medicine.
If you could grant three wishes for the health service, what would they be?
An uncompromisingly strong focus on health education and prevention, because if we don't get some of the current health trends under control, future generations will be impoverished trying to pay the healthcare costs, not to mention the human cost. I would also implement excellent support, facilities and careers for frontline staff in healthcare and rewards for those who make a difference.
What is your greatest fear?
Incapacity due to illness.
Have you ever been a patient and were you a good one?
Yes - and I was a good one after pain relief.
When or where are you happiest?
In south Kerry with friends.
How do you cope with stress ?
Reading a good book, being with interesting people and escaping to Kerry.
What trait do you most admire in yourself?
Diplomacy and steadfastness in the face of adversity.
What is the trait you most dislike in yourself?
Enthusiasm for many things always means taking on too many projects.
Do you use alternative or complementary medicine or therapies?
Yes, reflexology and I'm hoping to try other therapies. I strongly believe that a healthy diet and lifestyle are an indispensable complement to the treatment of any ailment.
Who or what makes you laugh?
Pat Shortt and Catherine Tate.
What is your motto?
The strong hand uppermost or give it your best shot. Also enjoy life.
What books would you bring to a desert island?
Guide to Inshore Marine Life by Erwin and Picton, Dublinoiseries by Flann O 'Brien and Rebel! A Biography of Thomas Paine by Samuel Edwards.
