What figure from the world of medicine or health do you most admire?
The late Dr Noel Browne for his integrity, courage and unfailing commitment to improving the health of ordinary people.
What other career might you have chosen?
Either garden design or sports journalism.
If you could grant three wishes for the health service, what would they be?
I would ensure that decisions are taken without political interference, that the primary focus is on targets and health outcomes and establish a national education programme starting with primary schools children to encourage them to take personal responsibility for their health.
What is your greatest fear?
Loss of a loved one.
Have you ever been a patient and were you a good one?
Yes, probably not very good.
When or where are you happiest?
In Cardiff last May watching Munster win the European Cup or perhaps a month earlier watching the semi-final against Leinster. I can't make up my mind on which was best.
How do you cope with stress?
Badly, so usually I try to avoid it, but that's difficult with teenage children.
What is the trait you most admire in yourself?
Energy and drive.
What is the trait you most dislike in yourself?
Impatience.
Do you use alternative or complementary medicine or therapies?
No.
Who or what makes you laugh?
Only Fools and Horses, Billy Connollyand Robin Williams. Also Brendan "Toby" Coleman, my Sunday morning golf partner.
What is your motto?
I don't have one but if I did it would involve trying to do my best at all times.

Morning Ireland.
What books would you bring to a desert island?
All John Irving's books, Roy Jenkin's biography of Churchill, Lake Wobegone Days by Garrison Keillor and Birdsong by Sebastian Faulks.
