Michael O Shea, chief executive of the Irish Heart Foundation

Occupation: Chief executive of Irish Heart Foundation

Who in medicine do you most admire? Prof Risteard Mulcahy. He was a founding member and first president of the Irish Heart Foundation. He was also one of the first advocates of a smoke-free environment - and took an early lead role in highlighting the harmful effects of smoking and general benefits of a healthy lifestyle.

What other career paths could you have chosen? I had a most satisfying 20-year career as an army officer - followed by 14 years in the Irish Heart Foundation. Journalism or writing in general does hold an attraction.

If you were Minister for Health, what would be your first priority? It would be difficult to surpass the benefits of the smoking ban initiative. If I were to choose, I would make every effort to improve the in-hospital and community care of stroke patients.

Do you have any phobias? I have always had a fear of heights and Tipperary hurlers - otherwise I'm fearless (I'm a native of Kilkenny).

Have you ever been a patient - and are you a good patient? I have had minor operations for sports injuries. I believe I am a good patient - a view that does not have the full support of my wife.

If you were stranded on a desert island, what three books would you take with you? I'm not a great reader but did enjoy The Seven Daughters of Eve which I read recently. I would also enjoy any novel by Freddie Forsythe.

What do you do to relieve stress? The best stress buster has to be regular exercise. I enjoy golf once a week, do a weekly walk with heart foundation staff and work out in the gym a few times each week.

What is your favourite TV and radio programme? I enjoy most sports and nature programmes.

Where in the world would you choose to live outside of Ireland? As a family we lived for one year in Jerusalem. I could live easily in a peaceful Jerusalem.

Sum yourself up in under 10 words. Determined, open to compromise, enjoy a challenge and fair.

What alternative medicine have you tried? I have tried a few and believe that homeopathy has the most potential.

Who or what makes you laugh? The late Maureen Potter always made me laugh - I also enjoy Niall Toibin and Billy Connolly. I believe a sense of humour is so important, especially in the workplace.
