What figure from the world of health/medicine do you admire most?
The figure from the world of health is my GP David O'Kelly who has kept a very good eye on me over the years. I have been very fortunate in being able to create my alternative career over the last 15 years within the voluntary sector.
If you were Minister for Health what would your first priority be?
As Minister for Health I would fund the voluntary sector more effectively and invest in community services for older people. These are both areas in need of financial recognition.
Do you have a phobia/what is your greatest fear?
I am afraid of heights since a climbing accident.
Have you ever been a patient and were you a good one?
I have been in hospital three times once after the accident and twice for spinal surgery. I found it intimidating and couldn't wait to get out.
What three books would you bring to a desert island?
The three books I would bring to the desert island are Eric Fromm's Art of Loving, Chaucer's Tales and a collection of poems from Irish Poets.
Have you a fail-safe method of dealing with stress?
I don't have a fail-safe way of dealing with stress but we have a holiday home by the sea in Wexford and that often is my sanctuary.
What is your favourite TV or radio programme?
My favourite TV programme is Inspector Morse.
If you did not live in Ireland, where would you choose to spend the rest of your life?
I would love to spend time in Spain. I love the sun.
Summarise yourself?
I am enthusiastic, diplomatic (most times), concerned, and impatient for progress, disorganized, fair and want the voice of the vulnerable to be heard.
Do you use alternative medicine/therapies?
I go regularly to Simoni my osteopath who keeps me mobile.
Who or what makes you laugh?
My brother Patrick has an ability to capture the funny side of life and makes me laugh and so did the two Ronnies.
