What figure from the world of medicine or health do you most admire?
I admire Dr Christian Barnard, the pioneering heart transplant surgeon.
What other career might you have chosen?
Law.
If you could grant three wishes for the health service, what would they be?
I would ensure patients enjoy access to a high quality integrated health system based on clinical need rather than on individual means; I would implement universal health insurance where the money and resources follow the patient; and I would encourage more competition in the private health insurance market.
What is your greatest fear?
Not being around for my family.
Have you ever been a patient and were you a good one?
Yes.
When or where are you happiest?
I am at my happiest when I am on holidays with my wife and children in Connemara or sailing.
How do you cope with stress?
I remind myself what the most important things in life are, ie health, family and friends.
What is the trait you most admire in yourself?
I have a good sense of fairness and empathy.
What is the trait you most dislike in yourself?
Unfortunately, I tend to expect others to see the world as I do.

No.

My boys and good humour.
