Personal/family:Married to Derek with one child, Jack.

What figure from the world of medicine or health do you most admire?

I have great admiration for Dr Edward Jenner, who introduced the first vaccine against smallpox over 300 years ago. He was ridiculed for the way he approached vaccination, but his perseverance and belief in his work led to one of our most important medical achievements. I can't imagine living in a world today without vaccines.

What other career might you have chosen?

I spent six years in scientific research, but left because of the lack of opportunities for academics in Ireland. If things were different in this country I think I'd still be there.

If you could grant three wishes for the health service, what would they be?

Better hospital facilities for patients and for staff. A ringfenced State-funded programme for GPs and practice nurses to motivate patients to make positive changes in their health and lifestyle. More funding for primary care referral, particularly dieticians, physical activity professionals and behaviour councillors.

What is your greatest fear?

Being unable to care for my family because of serious illness.

Have you ever been a patient and were you a good one?

I was in Holles Street maternity hospital for three days following the birth of my son. I like to think I was a good patient, but I suppose you'd have to ask the midwives.

When or where are you happiest?

Spending time with my family.

How do you cope with stress?

I always work to the best of my ability and try not to let myself worry about things that are beyond my control.

What is the trait you most admire in yourself?

I'm a good multi-tasker.

What is the trait you most dislike in yourself?

Impatience.

Do you use alternative or complementary medicine or therapies?

No. My science background makes me a little sceptical about certain alternative medicines and treatments. But if it works for some people, who am I to knock that?

Who or what makes you laugh?

My one year old.

What is your motto?

Always be grateful for the good things in life.

What is your favourite TV or radio programme?

On TV, I'm enjoying The Apprentice at the moment. On radio, I always tune in to The Last Word with Matt Cooper.

What books would you bring to a desert island?

Nothing too high-brow. I'd bring my favourite book, Sophie's Choice by William Styron, and for a good laugh Bridget Jones's Diary, by Helen Fielding.
