Gerry O'Dwyer, deputy general manager of the Cork University Hospital Group, has been appointed chief executive officer of Crumlin Childrens' Hospital in Dublin.

The group includes Cork University Hospital, Mallow General, St Mary's Orthopaedic, the Erinville and St Finbarr's Maternity Hospitals.He has played a central role in promoting service improvement across all five hospitals and was prominent in developing the Cork/Kerry Major Accident Emergency Plan.

Mr O'Dwyer was also instrumental in setting up the Marine Consultation Service that provides medical advice to vessels in Irish waters, through direct radio contact with consultants in the accident and emergency department of Cork University Hospital - the only "level one" trauma centre in the Republic.

He is past president of the Irish Health Service Management Institute and last year was made a member of the National Hospitals Office steering group - set up as part of the Health Services Reform Programme.

Edelman, the specialist healthcare communications practice, has appointed Cathy Curran as account manager. She has eight years experience in public relations and has worked in PR agencies in London and Dublin. Prior to joining Edelman, Ms Curran worked for four years with the Irish Pharmaceutical Health Association (IPHA) as communications executive.

Fianna Fáil Councillor Liam Creaven has been elected chairman of Dublin's Northern Area Health Board. He was formerly vice-chairman of the board and is a member of Fingal Co Council. He replaces Dr Dermot Fitzpatrick. He had been appointed to the NAHB and the Eastern Regional Health Authority (ERHA) by Dublin City Council. Dr Fitzpatrick's recent resignation from Dublin City Council to comply with the dual mandate meant that he could no longer sit as one of its representatives on the boards of the NAHB and the ERHA.
