1. Stay in the shade when the sun is at its strongest - between 11am and 3pm.
2. Keep babies of under one year out of the sun. Remember to give them drinks to avoid dehydration and dress them in loose clothing to help keep them cool.
3. Invest in a sun umbrella for your baby's buggy. This should keep their arms and legs from being exposed to the sun.
4. Tightly woven clothing and a wide-brimmed hat, preferably with a flap at the back to cover their neck, will help protect young children from the sun.
5. Sun cream with both sun protection factor (SPF) of more than 15 and UVA and UVB should be applied generously every two hours and after swimming.
6. Buy sunglasses that comply with the British Standard BS 27 24 19 87 or European Standard EN 1836.
