These microorganisms can help with digestion, and there is increasing evidence that they might help treat irritable bowel syndrome and also prevent or reduce the severity of colds and flu.

They are found in things like yogurt, kefir, kombucha, sauerkraut and other fermented foods. They are also available in supplement form.

According to the Irish Nutrition and Dietetic Institute, having the right balance of good bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract is essential for good health, and probiotics are one way to alter the balance of bacteria in your gut.
