Clotrimazole - an antifungal drug
What is it?
We are surrounded by fungi, the majority of which cannot live in the body. However, some types do grow in the mouth, nails, skin and hair, causing irritation and unsightly changes. Clotrimazole is a drug used to treat certain fungal infections.
What is it good for?
Clotrimazole is useful in the treatment of fungal infections including thrush, a condition caused by the proliferation of the Candida organism. This can cause infection of the mouth, bowel and vagina and penis. In addition to contact with another infected person, thrush can occur as a side effect of a course of antibiotic treatment, with oral contraceptive use or in those with diabetes. Clotrimazole is available in cream, powder, pessary and topical solution.
How does it work?
Most antifungal drugs alter the permeability of the fungal cell walls. Chemicals needed for cell life leak out and the fungal cell dies. Fungal infections of the skin usually improve within a week.
