What is it good for?

Lithium is used to decrease the frequency and intensity of mood swings that are characteristic of manic depressive disorder - an illness when mood swings become grossly exaggerated with peaks of elation alternating with troughs of depression. In addition it is sometimes used to prevent and treat severe depression.

How does it work?

Lithium works by reducing the intensity of mania, lifts depression and lessens the frequency of mood swings. It usually takes up to three weeks before the drug becomes effective.

Any contraindications

Many drugs interact with lithium and so you should not take any over-the-counter preparations or other prescription medications without advice from your doctor.

Possible side-effects?

Lithium can be toxic if the level in the blood rises too high. Symptoms of lithium poisoning include vomiting, blurred vision, diarrhoea and twitching. Regular tests are required to check the lithium concentrations in the blood.

Alternative Remedy: Nettles

What is it?

Nettles are wild plants which grow prolifically in Ireland. The dried leaves and flowers (in bloom) of the young plants are used in infusion or tincture form as a herbal remedy. The roots are also used sometimes.

What is it good for?

The aerial parts of nettles are used to strengthen and support the whole body and are particularly good for improving kidney function and circulation. They are also used in the treatment of skin conditions such as acne, eczema, psoriasis and help circulation to the scalp to promote healthy hair growth. As an astringent, they are also used for nose bleeds or to relieve other haemorrhaging.

How does it work?

Nettles are valued as a body tonic because they are a rich source of iron and Vitamin C. They contain histamine, which makes them useful for allergic conditions.

Any contraindications?

If there is impaired renal function resulting in fluid retention, nettles are an unsuitable remedy.

Possible side-effects?

No known side effects.
