While some of the world's best thalasso centres can be found in France, Spain and Greece, it is no longer necessary to leave Ireland for a comfortable sit in a seaside stew. One of the most comprehensive destinations in Ireland and Britain is the Lodge and Spa at Inchydoney Island, in west Cork. Fresh ocean water circulates into the spa daily and it is used in a variety of treatments, including algae wraps, hydro massage and supervised gymnastics in heated pools equipped with a multitude of jets and mini-waterfalls. Pools only reach a depth of 1.3 meters, nullifying the need to know how to swim. As a week is the minimum prescription for authentic thalasso treatments, guests staying at least six nights can receive a consultation with a medical doctor.
Although the Kilkee Thalassotherapy Centre, which opened in June of 1999, does not yet have a medical doctor on staff, there are plans to employ one. The natural seaweed baths run from about mid-March until the end of October, as the seaweed is at its best between the spring and summer equinox. The centre does, however, offer thalassotherapy treatments year-round. "Kilkee had a tradition about 40 years ago of seaweed baths," says owner Eileen Mulcahy. "Just physically lying in a bath of heated seawater is therapy in itself, particularly for people with thyroid problems. Seaweed contains iodine which balances the body out."
Therapeutic body treatments and medical consultations are not on the menu at Kilcullen's Seaweed Baths in Co Sligo. Nonetheless, people looking for a relaxing seaweed bath have long sought the destination. As immersion in ocean elements is a primary part of thalassotherapy, Kilcullen's offers the very basics.
