A Co Cork man appeared before Mallow District Court on charges relating to an hit-and-run incident in which an 11-year-old boy, Shane Curtin, died when the car driven by his mother was struck from behind.

Mr Brian McGinn (18), of Drishane, Killeagh, is charged with unlawful use of a car and with driving with no insurance and no driving licence on at Castlemartyr, Co Cork, on August 27th 1997.

At a court sitting in Midleton last week Mr McGinn, through his solicitor, Mr Joe Cuddigan, said he was responsible for the accident and that no blame attached to the other driver. Yesterday Insp Liam Hayes said he had no news of additional charges which were pending.

Judge Terence Finn remanded Mr McGinn in custody to St Patrick's Institution to appear before Dublin District Court on September 14th.
