A father of six was jailed for two months yesterday for stealing a child’s tricycle from a toy shop in Galway city.

PJ Doherty (28), Ballinamona Park, Tuam, who has 59 previous convictions, mostly for theft, pleaded guilty at Galway District Court to stealing the €112 tricycle from Smyths toy shop at Galway Retail Park on September 6th last. Insp Seán Glynn said Doherty parked his car outside the toy shop, walked in, picked up the tricycle, walked out, put it in the back of his car and drove off.

Gardaí recognised Doherty when they later viewed the shop’s CCTV footage.

Doherty returned to Smyths a few days later, after his arrest, and offered to pay for the tricycle, but staff refused to accept it.
