Athletics:Paul Hession has yet again raised the bar for Irish athletics by setting another 200 metre national record at the National Senior Track and Field Championships in Santry.

Hession, who has been in brilliant form all summer setting half-a-dozen Irish sprint records, flew to a superb time of 20.30 seconds.

The Galway sprinter followed up a superb fourth place in last Sunday's Norwich Union British Grand Prix to clinch his place in next month's IAAF World Championships.

"I'll be concentrating on the 200 metres there - it's my best event," said Hession, whose win in Santry Stadium strongly suggests he could reach the final in Osaka.

Eileen O'Keeffe was also in brilliant form raising her Irish hammer record to 73.21 metres.

The 24-year-old winner of last month's European Cup First League final in Vaasa also confirmed herself as a likely finalist in Japan.

World Indoor 60m Hurdles champion Derval O'Rourke bids on Sunday to consolidate her position in what is likely to be a small but strong Irish world championship side.

The Cork star is coming into top form after a delayed start to the summer season through injury and is aiming to produce an impressive showing in her 100m hurdles event.
