Lleyton Hewitt celebrated his first match since turning

20 by destroying Canadian Sebastian Lareau 6-3 6-1 to storm into the second round of the Sybase Open tennis tournament in San Jose yesterday.

Joining Hewitt in the second round were sixth-seeded American Jan-Michael Gambill and eighth seed Greg Rusedski of Britain.

But fifth seed Sjeng Schalken of the Netherlands was upset 6-4 6-4 by Australia's Wayne Arthurs.

In women's tennis Spaniard Magui Serna upset sixth seed Justine Henin 7-6 7-6 in the first round of the State Farm Women's Tennis Classic in Scottsdale.

Eighth-seeded American Meghann Shaugnessy overcame a poor performance to beat 17-year old Russian Elena Bovina 4-6 6-2 6-3 while ninth seed Elena Likhovtseva of Russia beat Silvija Talaja of Croatia 6-3 6-3 in another night match.

Serna was joined in the second round by compatriot Gala Leon Garcia, who beat Anne Kremer of Luxembourg 6-2 6-4 to set up a second round clash with top seed Lindsay Davenport.
