Hibs pair agree new deal

Hibernian manager Alex McLeish and assistant Andy Watson have agreed contract extensions with the Edinburgh club.

Hibernian manager Alex McLeish and assistant Andy Watson have agreed contract extensions with the Edinburgh club.

The duo, who have steered Hibs to second place in the Scottish Premier League, have agreed terms on a rolling deal that sees them under contract until at least the summer of 2003 and possibly beyond.

The news ends speculation that McLeish, the former Aberdeen and Scotland defender, could be lured away to a top post in the Premiership, with his name already being strongly linked as a possible successor to Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United.

McLeish said: "I have said many times that I am very happy at Hibernian and in Edinburgh and hopefully this announcement will demonstrate that fact in a genuine way.

"I am very happy that this deal means Andy and I can continue the job of seeking step by step improvement for this job."

Managing director Rod Petrie added: "It is our policy never to divulge financial details of negotiations or agreements reached with any individuals.

"However, there was a feeling on both sides that a new kind of rolling deal, with sensible structures and a formula in place for an automatic extension, would remove the time consuming need for annual negotiations.

"The contract is effectively a rolling deal with both the club and our management team demonstrating a genuine desire to work together for the foreseeable future.

"We have managed to reach an agreement with both Alex and Andy which means that at any moment in time and even beyond 2003 they are both committed to the club for a meaningful period of time.

"It equally means that the club is just as committed to its management team and that is great news for all our supporters."

McLeish added that he hoped the club would be able to announce soon that several key players were also ready to pledge themselves to the future.

Six first-team regulars will be out of contract in the summer including Franck Sauzee, Russell Latapy and Nick Colgan.

McLeish said: "Of course we would all like the talks to be resolved quickly but people will have to be patient.

"In the meantime it is very important that we are not deflected from focusing our attention on performing as well as we can and finishing as high up the league as we can."
