Snooker: A failed maximum break attempt by Peter Ebdon provided the only hint of drama 24 hours on from Ronnie O'Sullivan's incredible walk-out at the UK Championship in York.

Although Ebdon and John Higgins were battling for a place in the final, O'Sullivan was still the name on everyone's lips after he threw in the towel five frames into his match with Stephen Hendry.

It appeared only the sport's governing body, World Snooker, did not want to discuss what the future might hold for 'The Rocket' - because there was no word from them about any potential punishment.

On the table, Ebdon and Higgins served up some top-quality play as the opening session of their semi-final ended level at 4-4. Ebdon, the 2002 world champion, had a chance of a 147 in frame one but broke down on the 13th black.

He had been out of position leading up to the shot as he tried desperately to keep the sequence going, jumping up and down to try to urge the cue ball towards a better potting angle.

But while he missed the thin snick on the black, the break of 97 set the trend for the rest of the session as Ebdon added further contributions of 132 and 76.

Higgins was not to be outdone, the Scot knocking in an 83, 82, 75 and 65 to leave both men needing five more frames tonight to book a Sunday showdown with Hendry or Graeme Dott.
