In the biggest shock in women's tennis in recent years, Martina Hingis, the world No 1 and top seed for Wimbledon, was beaten in the first round yesterday by a little-known 16-year-old Australian.
Jelena Dokic, previously best known for the outbursts of her father, Damir, trounced Hingis 62, 6-0. It was only the third time in the competition that a No 1 seed had lost in the first round.
Hingis was playing for the first time in a Grand Slam tournament without the presence of her mother and coach, Melanie. She later withdrew from the women's doubles. Tournament referee Alan Mills issued a statement saying that Hingis had pulled out of the doubles "due to a recurring medical problem".
