The cottage, which was built between 1827 and 1934, was bought by the lock-keeper's family when the company was dissolved in 1954. They later sold it on to Castlereagh Borough Council.

The council has secured funding for the cottage's restoration from the European Union through the Building Sustainable Prosperity Fund, as well as from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Stormont Minister for Culture, Arts and Leisure Edwin Poots also announced plans for a range of landscape and heritage-related projects, including a trail from the lock-keeper's cottage.

"The project will provide visitors with a glimpse of how the 26-mile Lagan canal connecting Belfast and Lough Neagh via Lisburn impacted on day-to-day life between 1763, when it opened, until its abandonment in 1958," he said.

"Over half a million people each year enjoy walking along the towpath. Over the next five years, visitors will see the project unfold."
