A Galway city man has apologised to the Galway hurling captain, Joe Rabbitte, following his hoax call, which was broadcast on RTE Radio One on Thursday morning.
Mr Padraig Walsh (55), from Rahoon, admitted he was the hoax caller who purported to be Mr Rabbitte when he contacted the Maura O'Neill Show. He described the call as "a prank which went horribly wrong".
He contacted the show and, after they rang him back, he claimed on the air that camogie was not very ladylike and the game was not supported by the Galway team.
"I was always a man for the hoaxes, but this was the first one that backfired, unfortunately for me," Mr Walsh said. He added that he had apologised to Mr Rabbitte's family. "I did not honestly think it was on air. It was a pure joke and I don't know how she (Ms O'Neill) could have mistaken me for Joe Rabbitte as I'm 55 years old."
Mr Walsh contacted Galway Bay FM radio to admit responsibility and to apologise to Mr Rabbitte on air yesterday.
