Charlton today completed the signing of Matt Holland from Ipswich Town for £750,000 sterling.
The Republic of Ireland international has signed a four-year contract with the Addicks after negotiations were completed over the weekend.
The fee could rise to £900,000, with three further instalments of £50,000 payable over the next three seasons dependent on Charlton retaining their Premiership status.
Addicks boss Alan Curbishley told the club's official website: "I'm delighted to get Matt. He is a quality international player and will be a valuable addition to the first-team squad.
"A number of clubs were interested in signing Matt, but the fact he did not have to move house was a important factor in his decision to choose Charlton ahead of other clubs."
Holland is the second former Ipswich player to join Charlton in three months, following the London side's capture of defender Hermann Hriedarsson in late March.
The Bury-born 29-year-old, who was a key figure in Ireland's 2002 World Cup finals campaign, cost Ipswich stg£800,000 when he joined from Bournemouth in 1997. He made more than 250 appearances for the Portman Road outfit.
Promoted premier league club Portsmouth had made an offer similar to Charlton's two weeks ago.
Holland could have left Ipswich for Aston Villa for four million pounds last August after their relegation to the first division but rejected the move.
"It was a big decision for me to make (to leave Ipswich) but I'm 29 now and want to be playing Premiership football," Holland said.
