Almost one-third of new homelessness in Dublin is caused by evictions, according to Focus Ireland.
The agency for homeless services and housing today also revealed nearly 20 per cent of Dublin’s homeless have jobs.
A review done throughout June this year also revealed 45,000 households, or 120,000 people, are on housing waiting lists.
"Rocketing rents and lack of security mean that the private rented sector no longer provides a safety net for people to stop them becoming homeless," Mr Kieran Stenson of Focus Ireland said.
"When these facts are linked to seious lack of affordable accomodation for people on low income in the private rented sector, the reality is that it has left a lot of people between a rock and a hard place as they struggle to gain suitable accomodation for themselves and their families," Mr Stenson said.
Focus chief executive officer Mr Stephen Jones accused the Government of failing to deal with growing waiting lists for houses and the need for emegency accomodation.
But the Government announced two weeks ago the number of young people homeless has decreased by 25 per cent in 2000. It said the numbers have been substantially reduced again this year.
"In the last 12 months, the Government has provided extra emergency and longer-term accommodation and specialist provision for young homeless people in Dublin, as well as expanded services in Cork and Limerick," said the Minister of State at the Department of Health and Children, Ms Mary Hanafin.
