The former British under-secretary of health was among the international medical scientists and doctors to receive honorary degrees at Trinity College Dublin yesterday.

A doctor in medicine was conferred on Sir Michael Marmot, who is well known for his work on the link between the social environment, social status and the risk of cardiovascular diseases. He is a professor of epidemiology and public health at University College London.
A doctor in education was conferred on Prof Parveen Kumar, author of medical text books.
Two US experts were recognised: Prof Charles Dinarello of the University of Colorado, a specialist in inflammatory and infectious diseases, and Esther M Sternberg, a specialist in neuroimmunology.
