An honorary Doctorate of Science was yesterday conferred on the former Irish rugby international Keith Wood at the University of Limerick. Brian McLaughlin reports.

Mr Seán Donlon, the university's chancellor, said: "UL is honouring not just a local hero - he hails from nearby Killaloe - but a man in whose achievements Irish people everywhere have taken enormous pride. He has given great joy to rugby followers all over the world."

Keith Gerard Mallinson Wood was educated at St Munchin's College and the University of Limerick. He played rugby for St Munchin's College, Garryowen, Harlequins, Munster, Ireland and the British and Irish Lions.

Speaking at the ceremony, the president of the University of Limerick, Prof Roger Downer, said: "UL is pleased to recognise the considerable accomplishments of an individual who has gained international acclaim for his skill, courage and leadership.

"Through his achievements, Keith Wood has brought much credit and distinction to himself and to this region. The University of Limerick is proud to confer upon him the degree of Doctor of Science honoris causa."

The citation describes Wood as a man of great natural talent possessing vital extra ingredients such as bravery, temperament, power and above all his willingness to take on a challenge.
