The family of a German au pair who lost her life while saving a 13-month-old Irish girl in a traffic accident in Carrigaline earlier this year told of their deep gratitude to the local community yesterday for remembering their daughter with a memorial plaque in a new children's playground.
Mr Volkmar Naumburger, from Krobeln, near Dresden, spoke of how moved he and his wife, Martina, and their younger daughter, Christine, were by the gesture by the Carrigaline Community Association to honour their daughter, Nicole, for saving the life of Maeve Bosteels at Main Street, Carrigaline, on February 26th.
Nicole - who had come to work as an au pair for Maeve's parents, Dominique Bosteels and Finola McCarthy in August 2003 - was crossing the street with Maeve in her buggy when she was hit by a lorry. But she managed to push Maeve to safety and the toddler emerged unscathed from the accident which claimed the au pair's life.
