Hopes of recovering the bodies of three fishermen missing from the St Gervase off the west Cork coast faded yesterday when Naval Service divers confirmed that the vessel was now in several pieces, writes Lorna Siggins.

Ten divers from the patrol ship LE Orla searched the area at a depth of 30 metres yesterday in hazardous conditions. The search was continuing last night.

However, it was confirmed early yesterday that the keel had separated from the hull of the St Gervase. Bow sections have already been found several miles from the scene.

Divers have been searching for the fishermen since the vessel sank with four crew onboard in November. Only one body, that of Mr Timothy Angland, has been recovered.
