BUDDING YOUNG farmers will get a chance to grow their own fruit and vegetables when 360,000 seeds and 60 tonnes of compost land on school doorsteps this month.

Minister of State for Food and Horticulture Trevor Sargent has challenged every primary school to enter the Incredible Edibles competition to sow and grow potatoes, lettuces, cabbages, scallions and strawberries.

Schools must keep a diary to document the sowing and planting of the crops in February through to harvest in June. Marks will be awarded for team work, crop management and presentation.

There will be over €10,000 in educational prizes for the 10 best growing diaries.
