Iarnrod Eireann has described the breakdown of three passenger trains yesterday because of the failure of the hoses connected to the braking system as "unusual and even unprecedented".
The 5.30 p.m. Dublin-Limerick train was held up for one hour 40 minutes in Kildare station before engineers were able to correct the problem. Two other trains in the vicinity were also delayed because of similar difficulties.
A spokesman for the company said there was no risk whatever to the safety of the travelling public.
