London - The chief executive of a Bedfordshire hospital resigned yesterday after it was discovered that up to eight bodies were stored on the floor of an unrefrigerated Chapel of Rest due to a shortage of space in the mortuary, Rachel Donnelly reports.

Mr Ken Williams resigned following the publication in the Sunday Telegraph of a photograph of the bodies lying on the floor of the chapel. The NHS executive regional director of the Eastern Region, Mr Peter Houghton, said the "appalling pictures" highlighted totally unacceptable practices.
