One of the five Dublin teaching hospitals which earlier this year announced plans to close beds has defended its intention to recruit an arts officer, writes Eithne Donnellan, Health Correspondent.
Tallaght Hospital, which incorporates the National Children's Hospital, said an arts officer would work to make the hospital "more aesthetically pleasing" and research indicated this would "promote healing".
A hospital spokeswoman yesterday stressed the position was being funded from money raised by volunteers. She added: "It is often acknowledged that stimulation of the spirit has proven a vital aid in recovery of the body and mind."
