Hospital `needed' in central Dublin

A HOSPITAL in central Dublin will become a necessity, a city deputy said

A HOSPITAL in central Dublin will become a necessity, a city deputy said. Mr Ivor Callely (FF) said apartments were being built all over the city while hospitals were being closed and moved to the suburbs. The retention of at least one of the existing hospitals should be considered as part of any future plan.

He was speaking on the Health Amendment Bill under which new accounting procedures are to be introduced for health boards. The Minister of State for Health, Mr Brian O'Shea, said the existing health boards would remain but in the Eastern Health Board area some changes were needed which the Minister for Health, Mr Noonan, would be announcing soon.

The Bill passed its second stage and was referred to a Daily committee.
