A 15-year-old gunman has released all 23 students and a teacher he held hostage for more than four hours during a standoff with police at a Marinette, Wisconsin, high school yesterday.
Marinette County emergency management director Eric Burmeister said an unidentified student armed with a loaded handgun released the students unharmed.
The student shot himself after police officers entered the classroom, police said. He was taken to a hospital, and his condition is not immediately known.
Earlier in the day, the student took a class of 23 high school students and the teacher hostage at the school and initially refused to negotiate with police.
Police were dispatched to the Marinette high school after a call at 3.48pm local time (9pm Irish time). The school was surrounded and the perimeter secured, officials said.
The school has about 800 students, according to its website. Marinette is about 50 miles north of Green Bay, Wisconsin.
