"I will spend the next week deciding whether to go through with the deal.

"I need a striker to replace Robbie Fowler and Anelka is my first option. But I want to do the right thing by the club."

Houllier is also taking an interest in two France-based midfielders, Bruno Cheyrou of Lille and Salif Dio of Sedan.

"There will be some players that will leave and others that will stay," said the Anfield boss.

"There will also be players coming. That is part and parcel of the modern game."
