Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier has taken another major step towards recovery after undergoing cardiac surgery a week ago.

The Reds caretaker boss Phil Thompson revealed that Houllier was due to come out of the intensive care unit at the hospital where he was recuperating after the 11-hour operation.

Thompson, speaking after Liverpool's 4-1 victory at Leicester today, said: "There is great news about Gerard in that he is coming out on intensive care.

"I told the players because I know Gerard will have known it is Saturday afternoon and they would have wanted to put on a performance for him, which they did.

"They will probably be reminded of that every time we go out and play. They were pleased to hear the news and did the business again for him." -PA
