Houston - Clean-up crews cleared debris and pumped out what was left of floodwaters yesterday as people returned to their homes after Houston was swamped by nearly three feet of rain from the remnants of tropical storm Allison that killed at least 18 people.
In Houston, 17 people died in the storm which came ashore from the Gulf of Mexico on June 5th and stalled in south-eastern Texas. One person was killed in neighbouring Louisiana. The remains of Allison, a spiralling low-pressure system, slipped back into the Gulf on Saturday, moved east and struck Mississippi and Alabama yesterday with up to eight inches of rain and high winds.
