To establish your level of fitness, take your pulse while resting, preferably first thing in the morning.
Find your pulse on your left wrist using your index and middle finger, then, using the second hand of a watch, count the number of beats in 15 seconds. Multiply the result by four to establish your resting heart rate per minute.
100 beats per minute = Unfit
75 beats per minute = Average

50 beats per minute = Very Fit
The rate will go down as you get fitter because your heart pumps more blood with each beat and so needs to beat less often to do the same job.
