Hundreds of mourners today attended the funeral of Martin "Marlo" Hyland.

The Requiem Mass ahead of the burial of Hyland, shot dead in a gangland hit last week, was held in Christ the King Church in Cabra.

Parish priest Fr Gregory O'Brien told mourners that violent criminals die twice: once on the inside, before eventually dying a physical death. He asked the congregation to pray for everybody who was already dead on the inside.

Afterward, several limousines carrying relatives followed the hearse adorned with floral tributes to Glasnevin Cemetery for the burial. Wreaths spelt out "Grandad" and "Dad", and one large tribute in yellow flowers read "The Budgie".

Tense scenes followed the ceremony outside the church when a van collided with a cameraman among the large press turnout.

Some mourners around the hearse cheered when the journalist was knocked to the ground close to two Garda vans that made up the low-key security presence.

Hyland was shot dead last Tuesday in an attack suspected of being carried by members of his own gang who thought police were getting too close to him. It was believed to be one of the biggest gangland funerals in the Republic since the burial of Martin Cahill in 1994.
