Hundreds attend Salthill funeral of golfer's son

The funeral of Mr Darren O'Connor (17), son of the golfer Christy O'Connor jnr, took place in Galway yesterday

The funeral of Mr Darren O'Connor (17), son of the golfer Christy O'Connor jnr, took place in Galway yesterday. Hundreds of people filled the Church of Christ the King, Salthill, for the funeral Mass.

Mr O'Connor was killed on Monday when the white BMW he was driving was in a head-on collision with a jeep on the main Galway-Limerick road. The driver of the jeep, Mr Michael Hynes (52), of Miltown Malbay, Co Clare, and Mr O'Connor's front-seat passenger, Mr David Quinn (18), also died.

Among the mourners from the golfing world at the funeral were Des Smyth, Philip Walton and John O'Leary. The singer Chris de Burgh and his wife, Dianne, also attended.

The Taoiseach was represented by Capt Micheal Kiernan. Mr Michael D. Higgins and Ms Maire Geoghegan-Quinn were also present.

The chief celebrant, Father Henry Keogh, the parish priest of Clarenbridge, offered the Mass not only for Mr O'Connor but also for the two other victims of the accident.

Six of Mr O'Connor's friends holding golf clubs formed a guard of honour outside the church. Burial took place at Rahoon Cemetery.
