BEIJING - Hundreds of plainclothes police mingled yesterday with day trippers and children flying kites on Beijing's Tiananmen Square, where seven years ago army tanks and troops crushed a student led democracy movement.
Visitors from the countryside seemed oblivious to the heavy police presence as they posed for photographs in front of the Monument to the Revolutionary Martyrs.
In Hong Kong activists burned a portrait of the Chinese Prime Minister, Mr Li Peng, and democrats laid wreaths and scheduled a candle lit vigil to mark the occasion. Mr Li was one of the leaders widely blamed for the crackdown in which an unknown number of people were killed.
