At least 500 anti-war campaigners gathered outside Shannon Airport today to protest at the use of Irish airspace and landing facilities by US military planes.

The protesters left Bunratty Castle for the five-mile walk to the airport before gathering outside the airport for music and short speeches.

Among those in attendance were the Bishop of Kilaloe, Dr Willie Walsh, Green Party leader, Mr Trevor Sargent and former United Nations Assistant Secretary General, Mr Denis Halliday.

Addressing the gathering today, Mr Haliday said the Taoisech Mr Ahern was bringing shame upon the Irish people by allowing US military planes refuel at Shannon.
