A search is to be resumed off the Wicklow coast this morning for a body which was reported to have been seen in the sea off north Brittas Bay beach yesterday. A helicopter from the Irish Marine Emergency Service (IMES) and the offshore and inshore lifeboats from Wicklow took part in the search after a jet-skier reported seeing a body in the water at about 6 p.m. They returned to base after dark last night.

Gardai in Wicklow said there had been no reports of anyone missing.

However, a spokesman for the Royal National Life Boat Institution in Wicklow said it had been "seemingly reported" that a bottom of a tracksuit and a pair of woman's shoes had been found on the beach.

This suggested that the body may be that of a woman but the RNLI spokesman stressed there was no evidence other than the report by the jet-skier.

"So far no body has been found," he said.

Beach guards from Wicklow County Council and IMES onshore search-and-rescue units from Wicklow and Arklow combed the beach.

The searched was called off after dark.
