Mr Ian Huntley had been treated in hospital for an overdose of anti-depressants, which he had reportedly accumulated and hidden in tea bags inside his cell at the high-security Woodhill Prison in central England.
Mr Huntley (29) is charged with the kidnap and murder of 10-year-old girls Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman, whose disappearance from their homes in Soham, Cambridgeshire, last August prompted one of Britain's biggest-ever missing persons investigations.
Their remains were found in woods near a US air force base 13 days after they were last seen in their hometown of Soham, in the east of England.
Mr Huntley's companion, Ms Maxine Carr (25), is charged with assisting an offender and perverting the course of justice by giving false information to police.
The trial of Mr Huntley and Ms Carr is to start on October 6th.
