The actress Liz Hurley, who braved placard-waving protesters at her US movie premiere, has promised to pay £17,000 to an actors' union for taking a role during a strike.

And the 35-year-old beauty - who was called a "scab" at the event in Los Angeles - aired her frustration by yesterday making public a letter she has written to the union.

She has been targeted by the Screen Actors Guild - of which she is a member - for appearing in an Estee Lauder advert during a strike by members, despite her apologies.

Better known for stealing the show in a succession of revealing outfits at movie premieres, her appearance at the Bedazzled screening on Tuesday night saw her jeered by the crowd.

But in her letter to the union, released by her London office, she pointed out how she was unaware of the strike because she was based in the UK - and the union had not let her know about it.

"I do not have a commercial agent, the strike had not been in the news in the United Kingdom and I received no mail from SAG informing me of the strike," she said.

And Hurley stressed: "My contract with Lauder and Bates, its advertising agency, is filled with references to compliance with union contracts."

The letter continued: "Clearly Bates should have told me and I feel violated by them and I am furious that they did not have the decency to let me know of the strike after we worked together for years.

"Of course, had I known about the strike, I would never have appeared in the commercial."

She said she did not deliberately cross the picket line and said she felt "victimised".

"I apologised immediately upon learning of the problem and asked my attorney to try to resolve it. But, I cannot rewrite history. I was then, and am now, deeply sorry about what happened and the pain and disappointment that it has caused the membership.

"I can assure you, it has caused me a great deal of pain and embarrassment and a deep sense of violation by those whom I had trusted."

Hurley - who split with boyfriend Hugh Grant earlier this year - added that the situation would not arise again.
