Hurling star assault case is adjourned

Seven men appeared in Thurles District Court yesterday in connection with the assault on Kilkenny hurling star P.J. Delaney.

Seven men appeared in Thurles District Court yesterday in connection with the assault on Kilkenny hurling star P.J. Delaney.

The summons on which the men appeared related to an incident outside a Thurles hotel last September and was adjourned at the request of Thurles-based Supt Pat Finlay.

Supt Finlay told the court he had been instructed by the DPP to have the matter dealt with by indictment.

He made an application to have it adjourned while a book of evidence was being prepared.

Three of the men were summonsed on a count of intentionally or recklessly causing harm contrary to Section 4 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act 1997. They were: Mr Michael McCarty jnr, Galboola, Littleton, Thurles; Mr John O'Meara, Childers Park, Thurles and Mr Peter McCarty, Cabra Bridge. They were also summoned on a count of violent disorder contrary to Section 15 of the Criminal Justice (Public Order) Act 1994.

Mr John O'Donoghue, Beechwood Lawns, Thurles; Mr Philip McCarty, Cabra Court, Thurles; Mr Peter McCarty, Cabra Court, Thurles, as well as a juvenile, who cannot be named for legal reasons, were summonsed on counts of committing violent disorder contrary to Section 15 of the Act.

Judge Tom O'Donnell adjourned the case until June 9th.
