Miami - Hurricane Keith lashed Belize and Mexico's Yucatan peninsula yesterday, as a US National Hurricane Centre forecaster warned of a potential disaster.
"Along Belize and the south-east of Yucatan, we expect it to be devastating," said NHC meteorologist, Mr Eric Blake, noting that the NHC had received reports of collapsed structures and one injury to a child in Belize.
Power lines are also reportedly down in Belize City, an NHC statement said. The hurricane threw the Yucatan peninsula into a state of high alert, as some 2,000 people were evacuated from the Caribbean coasts of Quintana Roo state and 50 others were trapped on a reef, waiting to be rescued, authorities said.
