Husband charged in 'lake' murder

Barrow - The husband of the "lady in the lake", Carol Park, was charged with her murder last night

Barrow - The husband of the "lady in the lake", Carol Park, was charged with her murder last night. A retired schoolteacher, Mr Gordon Park (53), is to appear before magistrates in Barrow, Cumbria, at 10 a.m. this morning, police said. Mr Park was questioned by detectives for 36 hours after being arrested at his home in Norland Avenue, Barrow, on his return from a holiday in France.

Carol Park's body was found in Coniston Water 12 days ago - 21 years after her husband reported her missing from their home in Leece. Local divers discovered the body, still dressed in a baby doll nightdress, weighted down and wrapped in plastic, 70 feet down on the lake bed. After his 30-year-old wife's disappearance in the summer of 1976, Mr Park had made a Christmas appeal in his local paper for her to come home.
