Judge Patrick Brady was told that when charged, the defendant said he had nothing to say.

An application was made to the court to alter his address from Santry in Dublin to Lambay View, Beldaragh, The Naul.

Dressed in a green fleece top and dark combat-style trousers, the 35-year-old accused sat chewing gum without expression as Sergeant Pat Marry told a media-packed courtroom of the charge against him. He was remanded in custody at Cloverhill prison until next Friday.

Scuffles broke out again outside the courthouse as Mr O'Reilly was led away under a heavy Garda presence.

Ms O'Reilly was found dead at her home in Beldaragh just over two years ago.

Her bloodied body was found on the floor of her bedroom by her mother, Rose Callely, after she failed to turn up to collect the younger of her two children at a creche.

A post-mortem examination showed she had died from head wounds inflicted by a blunt instrument. During the extensive two-year-old investigation, detectives identified a suspect's car and questioned every owner in Ireland of the same model of car, a Fiat Marea saloon.
