Arusha - A leader of the notorious Hutu militia group that led the 1994 genocide in Rwanda was convicted of genocide yesterday by a UN tribunal and sentenced to life imprisonment. A tribunal spokesman said the court found Georges Rutaganda, a businessman and vice-president of the Interaham we militia, guilty on one count of genocide, one of crimes against humanity and one of murder for his role in the slaughter of an estimated 800,000 people.
The prosecution had accused Rutaganda of distributing weapons for the extermination campaign and leading massacres against thousands seeking refuge in a school.
